Before the Music captures the stillness that exists just before a performance begins.
A ballerina sits with her back to the viewer beneath a single glowing spotlight. Her white tutu spreads dramatically across the lower portion of the composition, while the surrounding darkness leaves her almost completely alone with the light. Delicate flowers arranged in her hair bring a quiet softness to the otherwise dramatic black-and-white scene.
There is a sense of anticipation in the painting—the private moment before the curtain rises, before the first note is played, and before movement replaces stillness.
The restrained palette allows texture and contrast to become the focus. Layers of white, cream, gray, brown, and black create the folds of the tutu, while expressive brushwork gives the dress movement even while the dancer remains completely still.
Originally painted by Jana Rae, this digital fine art print preserves the expressive brushwork, dramatic contrast, texture, and handmade character of the original acrylic painting, including the artist's signature.
Before the Music would be especially beautiful in a bedroom, dressing room, dance studio, feminine office, hallway, reading room, or an elegant neutral interior. Its predominantly black-and-white palette also makes it easy to pair with many decorating styles.
